Spoiler alert: The price per pod coupled with a choice in coffee roasters was a big factor in my choice to go with the Essenza Mini Original Nespresso maker. Original coffee capsule prices typically range from $0.44 to $0.80. The main difference with the Original line is that in addition to Nespresso’s line of coffee pods, you can also purchase original capsules from coffee roasters such as Starbucks, LavAzza, Pete’s, Cafe Bustelo, and more. The Original line uses a small capsule that sort of looks like the little creamer capsules you get at breakfast diners. Instead, you pick your capsule, and the machine scans it and determines the optimal amount of water (and temperature) to brew that specific capsule. No more deciding on whether to choose a 6 oz or 8oz cup size. This takes all the guesswork out of it for the customer. The Vertuoline capsules also use a barcode technology which the machine reads and then based on which type of pod it scanned, it then heats the appropriate amount of water designed for that specific pod. The Vertuoline capsules range in price from $0.85 to $1.25 per capsule. The Vertuoline capsules are still under patent, so you are restricted to the Nespresso brand of coffee pods/capsules. This is important to note for ordering your Nespresso capsules and because it affects both price and variety when it comes to purchasing your Nespresso coffee pods. The Original Nespresso machines and Vertuoline coffee makers also use different coffee capsules based on the technology used to extract the coffee. It also spins it after brewing to “dry” the capsule out. Essentially, it spins your coffee capsule really fast while ejecting water into it. The Nespresso Vertuoline machines use proprietary centrifugal technology to brew coffee. The Nespresso Original machines use 19-bars of pressure to extract the espresso (a bar is a metric unit of pressure). The Nespresso Original machines use the standard pump espresso machine technology that utilizes pressure to create an espresso shot. The Vertuoline coffee machines have 5 different size options: Alto (14oz), Mug (7.77oz), Gran Lungo (5oz), Double Espresso (2.7oz), and Espresso (1.35oz). The Lungo option brews a 3.7oz “long” espresso shot. The Espresso option brews a 1.35oz espresso shot. So next time that they want a cup of coffee, all they need to do is press either the espresso or lungo button, depending on which one has been programmed, and the machine will automatically pour that same amount.The Original Nespresso machines have two options: Espresso & Lungo. Once they let go of the button, the machine will remember the amount of coffee that was poured and will program that amount to be the new standard for that button.
They then need to press down either the espresso or lungo button, depending on which one they are interested in programming, and keep pressure on it until the level of the coffee has reached their desired amount. In order to program the cup size of a Pixie machine, the individual first needs to push down the rectangular black power button on the front of the machine to turn it on.Īs soon as the lights have stopped blinking, the user can insert their capsule that is compatible with Nespresso machines into the top of the machine and put their appropriate sized cup underneath of the valve. So, instead of having to hold down the button every single time, the user will just need to press it once and the machine will automatically distribute the exact same amount every time that specific button is pressed. Whatever amount of coffee it has distributed out of the machine will now be remembered for the next time. Once the coffee has reached the level within the cup that they desire, they can let go of the button and the flowing will stop. Whichever one they choose, they need to hold down the button and maintain pressure on it even after the coffee starts flowing. They then either press the espresso button or the lungo button, depending on which one they want to program. Once the espresso and lungo buttons have finished flashing, the user can go ahead and put a capsule that is compatible with Nespresso with Nespresso machines into the top capsule area and put a cup underneath of the valve. In order to program the cup size of the Essenza Mini machine, users will need to first reach down to the side of the machine and turn it on by flipping the power switch.
